Computer simulation of an electron target  for the ESR storage ring of GSI Darmstadt (please find website at  www.gsi.de/portrait)
                      This  project was challenging because of the mutually exclusive requirements of a  high density, low temperature electron cloud used in collision experiments with  highly charged heavy ions for fundamental research.
                      The  result was a novel design of the electron gun and beam guidance system.  Both were designed using computer  simulations that take into account the Coulomb interaction by means of a self-consistent iterative approximation of  space charge.
